Course Description

This course supports professional development through training, research, and evaluation studies with a commitment to character education and extended learning.  This will enhance a students ability to join a professional environment by building character and communication skills.

Major Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner.

  • Name at least 5 career paths.

  • Be familiar with professional character traits.

  • Acheive a Gold Level CRC certificate.

It is extremely important for CAD technicians to continually develop and conduct

themselves professionally.  The CAD "lab" will be treated as if it were a professional

office much like industry reflects.  Your manors, work ethics, actions, and

communication are expected to be appropriate for this environment at all times.  The class, as a whole, will continually work on “professionalism” on a daily basis; from simple greetings at the beginning of class to how to effectively communicate through email.  "Respect thy neighbor" will always be practiced. Character has a bigger play on your job than you may realize.

If you really want to impress your employer and co-workers, whether you indulge or not, learn how to make coffee like a pro then volunteer to do so at the office.  You will become an office hero!!

Professional Dress Day

Every Student is expected to participate in Professional Dress Day which will be held the same day every week (as voted on by the students).  Dress pants (no jeans) and collared shirt for men; dress pants, or skirt with collared blouse, or dress for women.  Appropriate attire will be discussed each week so each student is aware of expectations of industry.

Career Tree

To help broaden communication skills and increase knowledge of industry paths available, discussions will focus around the Career Tree.  From these discussions, presentations will be assigned and given by students on a chosen field.  The goal of this is to educate all students on industry paths that aren’t so common.  Extra points will be awarded to students who find someone within that field to come speak to the class. See Career Tree for additional information.

Character First

Character First is a program that helps students see the value of good character…so they can become more conscience individuals and build better workplaces and communities.  It is a training tool that describes good character and talks about the attitudes a person needs in order to improve relationships and make ethical choices on the job and in life. The character vocabulary helps challenge and applauds one another for good character.  Each student will create their own presentation on at least one of the Character First traits and present it to the class during the school year. See Character First for additional information.

CAD Math

Everyone’s favorite subject, I know, but consider this as a refresher of the basics; the basics that will make your CAD skills even more efficient and more productive.  We will start with whole numbers and work our way through applicable geometry and trigonometry.  Extra emphasis will be placed on fraction-to-decimal conversion.

Career Readiness Certificate (CRC)

CRC is a portable skills credential that gives employers and career seekers a uniform, standard, objective measure of key workplace skills. It certifies that a person has workplace skills that are transferable between industry sectors and across jobs within a sector.  There are 3 main categories covered: math, reading, and locating information.  Once a week for one hour, each student will go through a series of exercises to prepare for certificate testing.  The goal for the CAD program is Gold Level.  As an extra incentive, if all CAD students achieve a Gold Level Certificate, the instructor will host a pizza party at the end of the year to celebrate!

SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA is a CTSO (Career Tech Student Organization).  It is intended to improve the quality of America’s skilled workforce through a structured program of citizenship, leadership, employability, technical and professional skills training.

See SkillsUSA for additional information.

Live Work

Live work is a way to directly apply your knowledge and skill to help someone in the community.  Occasionally, an individual comes to our program with drafting needs.  Traditionally, these projects have been residential based, however, other needs have arose.  Other avenues of application is a yearly balsa wood bridge building contest where designs are discussed, considered, developed, and executed.
